Chinook Salmon Fishing on Lake Superior

Lake Superior is the least productive chinook water on the chain and a king here is a bonus fish, not a plan. The Minnesota North Shore and the Apostle Islands produce them most reliably, usually as a by-catch of a coho and lake trout program run in the top 60 feet.

Prime time

Late June through August, with the best shot in July off the Minnesota North Shore

Depths

20–80 ft down over 100–400 ft of water

Typical size

10–18 lb

Lake max depth

1,332 ft

Where

Water worth running to

The Minnesota North Shore, Knife River to Two Harbors

Wild chinook from the Knife River and French River systems return to this stretch. Boats run the 100 to 300 foot contour a mile or two out and take kings among the cohos.

Duluth and the Superior entry

Warmer water off the harbor entries pulls bait in early summer. The fish are shallow here — often in the top 30 feet — and this is where a small boat can fish safely.

Chequamegon Bay and the Apostle Islands

The bay warms first and the islands break the sea. Kings show around the outer islands in July, mixed in with coho and lake trout on the same trolling passes.

Marquette and the Chocolay River mouth

Michigan's central Superior shoreline produces a modest number of kings through July. Fish the drop east of the Chocolay and out toward Shot Point.

Whitefish Bay and the Tahquamenon

The warmest corner of Superior, and the one most like a lower-lake salmon fishery. Kings staging near the Tahquamenon River mouth in late August are the closest thing Superior has to a run.

How

Tactics, in the order we would try them

  1. 01

Shallow trolling with small spoons off planer boards

Superior kings feed on smelt and herring in the top 40 feet through most of the summer. Run 2.0 to 2.4 mph with small and medium spoons 100 to 150 feet behind a board, and keep a couple of lines in the top 15 feet where the coho are — that is where kings often hit too.

  2. 02

Downriggers at 30 to 70 feet

The thermocline on Superior sets up shallow and late. In July look for the 48 to 53 degree band between 30 and 70 feet and put a rigger in it with a spoon. Add a slider 15 feet up the cable to cover the top of the layer.

  3. 03

    Lead core and small dodgers

Three to five colors of lead core off a board fishes 15 to 30 feet down at 2.1 mph. Pair it with a small dodger and a squid or a peanut fly. Superior fish key on smaller profiles than lower-lake kings — think 2 to 3 inches, not 5.

  4. 04

Fishing the river mouths after a warm rain

In late August, warm runoff at the Knife, French, Chocolay and Tahquamenon river mouths pulls staging fish into 15 to 40 feet of water. Troll slow, 1.8 to 2.1 mph, tight to the plume at first light.

Why Superior is the wrong lake for kings, and go anyway

Lake Superior holds 2,900 cubic miles of water at an average depth of 483 feet and it is cold, clear and biologically poor. There is not much dissolved nutrient to build a food chain on, the alewife never established the way it did downstream, and the forage that exists — smelt, lake herring, sculpin — supports a native predator community rather than an introduced one. Chinook were stocked here, and some Minnesota and Wisconsin streams still produce wild smolts, but the lake has never made them into what Michigan and Ontario do.

That is the honest framing. A Superior king is a nice surprise in a box of coho and lake trout. Plan around the coho, be ready for a king, and you will have a good day.

Shallow, not deep

The most useful thing to know about Superior salmon is that they live near the surface. Because the whole lake is cold, the fish are not driven down to find 50 degree water — often the top 30 feet is already there in June. In a normal July the thermocline sits somewhere between 30 and 70 feet on the Minnesota shore, and plenty of fish ride above it.

This inverts the gear conversation. A boat that would be helpless on Lake Michigan without downriggers can catch Superior salmon on planer boards, lead core and small spoons. It is the most accessible open-water salmon program on the chain in terms of tackle, and the least accessible in terms of weather.

Where wild fish come from

The Knife River and French River on Minnesota’s North Shore are the best-known chinook producers, and the fish that return there are the ones anglers intercept between Duluth and Two Harbors. Wisconsin contributes from the Brule and a few Chequamegon tributaries. On the Michigan side, the Chocolay near Marquette and the Tahquamenon at the head of Whitefish Bay are the two names worth knowing. Whitefish Bay in particular is the warmest, shallowest, most nutrient-rich corner of Superior and behaves more like the lower lakes than the rest of the lake does.

Match the forage

Superior salmon eat smelt and young lake herring. Both are slim, silver and small. Downsize accordingly — 2 to 3 inch spoons and small squid behind a light dodger will outfish the magnum spoons that work on Lake Michigan kings. Silver, blue, green and plain nickel finishes cover most days on water this clear.

Superior is cold enough to kill you in June

This is not a figure of speech. Surface temperature on the open lake in June is frequently in the low 40s, and a person in the water at 45 degrees loses useful grip strength in about ten minutes. Superior does not care that it is a nice afternoon in Duluth. Wear a float coat or an inflatable, carry a VHF, and treat a forecast for a northeast wind on the Minnesota shore as a reason to stay in. Twenty miles of open water and no harbor for thirty miles is the normal condition along most of this coast.

What you are really getting

The trade for a thin king fishery is a lake where the lake trout are wild and self-sustaining, the water is drinkable, and you can fish for two days without seeing another boat. That is not a consolation prize.

Questions

Chinook Salmon on Superior, answered

Are there king salmon in Lake Superior?
Yes, but in small numbers. Most are wild fish from a handful of Minnesota and Wisconsin tributaries. Superior's cold, low-productivity water and thin forage base mean they never reach Lake Michigan or Ontario sizes.
How big do Lake Superior chinook get?
A 10-pound Superior king is a good fish and most run smaller. If you want a 25-pound chinook, fish Lake Ontario.
What is the best salmon to target on Lake Superior?
Coho. They are more numerous, they hold shallow, and the same trolling program that finds them will occasionally hand you a chinook. Lake trout are the other headline fish.
What are the rules for Superior salmon?
Three states border Superior and each sets its own limits, which change annually. Consult Minnesota DNR, Wisconsin DNR or Michigan DNR depending on which waters you fish.
Regulations

Size limits, bag limits, and open seasons for chinook salmon on Lake Superior are set by Michigan DNR, Wisconsin DNR and Minnesota DNR and change from year to year. Check the current rulebook before you keep a fish.
