Why This Site Exists

What we cover

Six bodies of water — Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, Ontario, and Lake St. Clair, which is not officially a Great Lake and which nobody who fishes it cares about. Eight states with shoreline. 12 gamefish. Beaches, dunes, lighthouses, launches, and the gear that survives a season on big water.

Every lake page pulls from the same set of published figures, so the numbers on this site agree with each other. Every species is cross-referenced against every lake it actually lives in — and only those. We do not generate a page for a fish-and-lake combination we cannot say something specific and true about.

What we don't cover

Politics. Not one word of it. This site is about water, fish, boats, and shoreline, and that is a deliberate editorial line, not an oversight. Conservation and fishery science — water temperature, ice cover, invasive species, stocking programs — are squarely in scope and always will be, because you cannot write honestly about this fishery without them.

How we make money

Amazon affiliate links. When you buy something through a link here, Amazon pays us a commission and you pay exactly the same price you would have paid anyway. That is the whole business model, and it is disclosed on every page that carries a link — above the link, not buried in the footer.

We are an affiliate, not a store. We hold no inventory, take no payment, and ship nothing. Every "buy" button on this site sends you to Amazon, and Amazon is the seller of record on all of it.

How we pick gear

Recommendations are ranked by a confidence score, not by raw star rating. A 5.0 with four reviews should not outrank a 4.6 with three thousand, and on this site it doesn't — the score weights the rating by how much evidence sits behind it. Beyond that, the filter is simply whether a thing is right for Great Lakes conditions: cold, deep, windy, and a long way from the ramp.

Every product write-up lists what is not good about the item. A recommendation with no drawbacks is a sales pitch.

On prices and regulations

Prices and ratings shown here were accurate on the date stamped on the page. Amazon sets the live price and it moves; treat ours as a ballpark and check the listing.

Fishing seasons, size limits, and bag limits are set by each state and change annually. We link straight to the agency that actually decides on every relevant page, and we will not state a limit as fact without a source. Read the current rulebook before you keep a fish.
