Lake Trout Fishing on Lake Huron

Lake Huron's lake trout are the best conservation story on the chain: a native fish that went to functionally zero under sea lamprey and now reproduces naturally across the main basin. Fish the rock from Rogers City to Drummond Island and you will find more, and shallower, lake trout than most anglers expect.

Prime time

May and June on shallow rock, July through September deep, with a heavy fall reef bite

Depths

20–50 ft in spring, 80–160 ft midsummer

Typical size

5–12 lb

Lake max depth

750 ft

Where

Water worth running to

Rogers City and Adams Point

The rock shelf between Rogers City and Adams Point is the heart of the modern Huron laker fishery. Fish 40 to 120 feet along the drop, and shallower in May.

Six Fathom Bank

A large offshore shoal in the middle of the main basin that rises sharply out of deep water. Classic summer structure and a long, committing run from Harbor Beach or Port Austin.

Presque Isle and Forty Mile Point

Steep rock close to shore. Troll the 60 to 140 line and pay attention to the reef edges — the fish sit on the break, not the flat.

Drummond Island and De Tour Passage

Cold current, clean rock and strong natural reproduction. Some of the most consistent lake trout water in the state, and protected enough for a smaller boat.

Thunder Bay and Thunder Bay Island

The reef complex around Thunder Bay Island holds fish through summer, and the shipwreck sanctuary bottom gives sonar plenty to look at.

Harbor Beach and Port Sanilac

Southern-shore deep water. Lakers stack on the basin edge in 90 to 160 feet through July and August, a short run from either harbor.

How

Tactics, in the order we would try them

  1. 01

Bottom-bouncing spoons and dodger rigs on downriggers

From July on, put the ball within five feet of the bottom in 90 to 150 feet and run a dodger with a spin-glo or a peeled minnow on a short leader at 1.7 to 2.1 mph. Watch the sonar and follow the contour; lakers do not chase far off bottom in warm months.

  2. 02

    Vertical jigging over reefs

Over Six Fathom Bank or the rock off Rogers City in 60 to 130 feet, drop a 1 to 2 oz jigging spoon or jigging minnow bait, tap bottom, rip it 18 inches and let it fall slack. The take is almost always on the drop and feels like the lure got heavy.

  3. 03

    Shallow spring trolling on rock

In May, when surface temperature is 42 to 48 degrees, lake trout hunt in 20 to 50 feet over clean rock. Pull spoons and stickbaits off planer boards at 2.0 to 2.4 mph. This is the most enjoyable laker fishing of the year and almost nobody does it.

  4. 04

    Wire dipsies for suspended fish

When the sonar shows fish 20 to 40 feet off bottom over deep water, a Dipsy on a 2 setting with 200 to 260 feet of wire and a small flasher-fly gets to them without dragging bottom. Effective in August over the basin edge east of Harbor Beach.

The fish that came back

Sea lamprey wiped lake trout out of Lake Huron by the mid-1950s. For fifty years after that, every laker in the lake came from a hatchery. Then something changed: lamprey control got better, the alewife collapsed in 2003, and wild lake trout started showing up in survey nets in numbers that kept climbing. Alewives contain an enzyme that destroys thiamine in the predators that eat them, which causes lethal deficiencies in lake trout fry. With the alewives gone, naturally spawned lake trout survived. Huron now has a largely self-sustaining native population for the first time in three generations.

For an angler that is not an abstraction. It means more fish, spread across more of the lake, in shallower water than the deep-basin hatchery fishery of the 1990s produced.

Shallower than you think

Huron averages 195 feet deep, far less than Michigan or Superior, and its thermocline sits correspondingly higher. Through May and early June, when the surface is 42 to 50 degrees, lake trout hunt in 20 to 50 feet over the clean rock shelves from Rogers City to Drummond Island. You can catch them on planer boards and spoons, on ordinary walleye tackle, within a mile of the launch.

Most anglers skip this because they associate lake trout with downriggers and deep water. Do not. The May shallow bite is the best-kept secret on Lake Huron.

Summer means bottom

By July the surface passes 65 degrees and the fish drop to the basin edge — 80 to 160 feet — and they sit on the bottom. This is when downriggers, dodgers and slow speeds matter. Run 1.7 to 2.1 mph and keep the ball within five feet of the bottom. The single most common mistake is trolling three feet too high; the difference between a blank pass and a double is often that.

Six Fathom Bank in the middle of the main basin is the classic summer target: a big shoal rising abruptly out of deep water, holding bait and fish through the hottest weeks. It is also a long open-water run and deserves a real forecast.

The forage picture

Huron lake trout eat round goby, sculpin, bloater and smelt. Goby especially — they are a bottom-oriented invasive that plugged directly into a bottom-oriented predator’s diet, and it is part of why the recovery took. Practical result: fish bottom-contact presentations. A spoon bouncing off rock, a jig hitting bottom, a dodger dragging through the last two feet of water column. Suspended fish exist, but bottom is the percentage play.

Fall on the reefs

Lake trout spawn on rock reefs in 20 to 60 feet from late September into October. They gather in numbers and they are aggressive. Many Great Lakes jurisdictions restrict or close fishing over known spawning reefs during this period specifically because the fish are so vulnerable, and the specifics change. Check the current rules for the management unit you are in before making a plan around fall reef fishing.

How Huron compares

Superior’s lake trout are wilder, bigger on average and living in deeper, colder, harder water. Lake Michigan’s are still substantially a stocked fishery. Ontario sits between. Huron’s advantage is access: shallow spring fish, protected water around Drummond and De Tour, short runs to good rock, and a population that is still expanding. If you want to catch a lot of lake trout without a 24-mile offshore run, this is the lake.

Questions

Lake Trout on Huron, answered

Are Lake Huron lake trout stocked or wild?
Increasingly wild. Natural reproduction across the main basin has recovered to the point where stocking has been reduced or halted in parts of the lake. It is the strongest lake trout recovery in the system outside Superior.
Where is the best lake trout fishing on Lake Huron?
The northern rock shoreline from Rogers City to Drummond Island, with Six Fathom Bank as the classic offshore option and the Harbor Beach basin edge for the southern shore.
How deep should I fish for Huron lake trout?
Twenty to 50 feet in May, 80 to 160 feet from July through September. Depth follows temperature — lakers want water in the low to mid 40s and they will sit on bottom to find it.
Are there size or season restrictions on Lake Huron lake trout?
Yes, and they vary by management unit and change from year to year, including rules protecting spawning reefs in fall. Read the current Michigan DNR guide for the specific waters you plan to fish.
Regulations

Size limits, bag limits, and open seasons for lake trout on Lake Huron are set by Michigan DNR and change from year to year. Check the current rulebook before you keep a fish.
