4.5(1,350)4.5 out of 5 stars, 1,350 reviews, on Amazon at the time this was written

A tougher, better-machined line counter than the budget tier, with a three-ball-bearing drive that stays smooth under a long run.

What's good

  • Machined aluminum spool holds up to being cranked down hard on wire
  • Counter is noticeably more consistent trip-to-trip than the sub-$100 reels
  • Free-float spool design makes it usable for casting, unusual for a counter reel
  • Easy to service — parts and schematics are widely available

What isn't

  • Counter housing is on the small side and hard to read in low light without a headlamp
  • Clicker is loud enough to be annoying and quiet enough to miss over an outboard
  • Heavier than the Okuma equivalent, which you notice on a 10'6" board rod

We list the drawbacks because a recommendation with no downside is a sales pitch. If a cheaper item does the job on your water, the write-up says so.
