What's good

  • CHIRP sonar performance well beyond what $120 suggests
  • 3.5-inch screen and small footprint fit a jon boat, a kayak, or a bow console with no room
  • GPS records waypoints and gives a speed readout accurate enough to troll by
  • Runs off a small 12V battery, which makes it a workable portable ice unit

What isn't

  • The screen is 3.5 inches and effectively unreadable in direct sun with polarized glasses
  • No charts at all — waypoints and a trail, nothing else, so it is not a navigation tool
  • Loses bottom past roughly 150 feet, which rules out most of Superior and deep Michigan

We list the drawbacks because a recommendation with no downside is a sales pitch. If a cheaper item does the job on your water, the write-up says so.
