45 lb Copper Trolling Line

4.5(380)4.5 out of 5 stars, 380 reviews, on Amazon at the time this was written

Solid copper trolling line that puts a spoon 60 to 100 feet down with no diver, no rigger, and a much better fight.

What's good

  • Gets deep at speed without the drag of a Dipsy — the fish fights you, not a disc
  • Copper's thin diameter and weight give a very stable, consistent depth curve
  • 300 feet is the versatile length; roughly 22 feet of depth per 100 feet at 2.5 mph
  • Blood Run's copper is annealed consistently and does not work-harden as fast as cheap wire

What isn't

  • Copper work-hardens and eventually breaks; plan on cutting back the terminal 20 feet each season
  • Requires a large-capacity reel — a 300-foot copper plus backing will not fit a size 300 line counter
  • A tangle in copper is usually terminal, not something you pick out

We list the drawbacks because a recommendation with no downside is a sales pitch. If a cheaper item does the job on your water, the write-up says so.
