St. Clair Smallmouth Drop-Shot and Ned Kit

What this kit does

Lake St. Clair smallmouth are big, numerous, and living in eight to sixteen feet of water you can see the bottom of. Clear water changes the math. Loud, fast, reaction presentations that crush river smallmouth get refused here on calm days. What works is small, quiet, and on light line, dropped near a fish that already knows you are there.

The Fenwick HMG in a medium-light to medium spinning taper is the tool. You need enough tip sensitivity to feel a drop-shot weight tick off sand into grass — that transition is where the fish sit — and enough backbone to move a four-pound fish out of cabbage. Seven feet to seven-six is the sweet spot.

The Shimano Stradic FL in a 2500 or 3000 size is the reel this kit is built around because of drag quality. A big St. Clair smallmouth makes a fast, hard run in open water, and you are holding it on six-pound-class fluorocarbon. A drag that hitches loses that fish. This is the one place in the kit where spending more is straightforwardly worth it.

Line is a two-part system: PowerPro braid as main line for sensitivity and casting distance, joined to an InvizX fluorocarbon leader of eight to ten feet. On water this clear the leader length is doing real work — it puts the visible braid far away from the bait.

For baits, two cover almost everything. The Z-Man Ned rig TRD on a light mushroom head is the highest-percentage smallmouth presentation in North America on hard bottom, and it works here exactly as advertised. The Strike King Coffee Tube kit covers the drag-and-hop presentation on sand and around rock, and tubes have been the St. Clair standard for thirty years. Drop-shot the same soft plastics when fish are suspended just off the grass.

The Deeper PRO+ castable sonar is in here for a specific reason: a lot of people fish this lake from a kayak, a rental, or a boat without good electronics, and knowing where the grass edge is beats guessing. It is not a substitute for a console unit if you have one.

What it deliberately leaves out

No baitcaster, no heavy rod. You could fish this lake with a casting setup and larger baits, and in fall on deeper rock you should. For the summer flats, spinning gear and light line out-fish it by a wide margin.

No topwater. Deliberate omission and a slightly painful one, because a walking bait over St. Clair grass at dawn is one of the great experiences in bass fishing. It is also a narrow window. The finesse kit catches fish all day; add topwater as a second box once you know the water.

No forward-facing sonar. It is the biggest advantage available on this lake and it is a four-figure decision that belongs to the boat, not to a starter kit.

No livewell gear or scales. This kit assumes you are releasing. Great Lakes smallmouth are slow-growing for their size and the trophy fish in this system are old.
