Muskie Casting Kit for Lake St. Clair

What this kit does

Lake St. Clair holds the densest wild muskie population on the continent, which means two things. You will get chances. And you will have a fifty-inch fish with two large treble hooks in its mouth in a net next to your leg, probably more than once, which is a genuine injury risk to you and a mortality risk to the fish.

This kit is built for both halves of that.

The St. Croix Mojo Musky in an 8-to-9-foot heavy casting taper is the rod. Length matters here specifically because of the figure-eight — the boatside turn you make at the end of every cast, which on St. Clair converts a startling number of follows into eats. A short rod cannot describe a big enough circle to keep a fish committed. The heavy power throws 8- to 12-ounce rubber all day and drives a hook through a bony jaw.

The Abu Garcia Revo Toro Beast is a large low-profile casting reel with the line capacity and the gearing to handle heavy baits thousands of times a trip. This is a fatigue choice as much as a strength one: the reel that hurts your hand after four hundred casts is the wrong reel.

PowerPro braid in 80 pound. No stretch, thin diameter for distance, and enough breaking strength that you are never the reason the fish got off.

The Stealth Tackle 130-pound fluorocarbon leader rather than wire. On water this clear, heavy fluoro is close to invisible and gets bit more. Wire is tougher. Inspect the fluoro after every fish and retie without sentiment.

The release tools are not accessories

The long-nose hook remover is how you get a treble out of a jaw without putting your hand inside it. Buy the long one. Add a bolt cutter capable of cutting the hooks — the correct move on a deeply hooked fish is to cut the hooks and get it back in the water, not to perform surgery.

Fish stay wet. Photos take ten seconds. Revive the fish upright in the water until it swims out of your hands under its own power.

What it deliberately leaves out

No trolling gear. Trolling large crankbaits across the mid-lake flats catches more October fish than casting does, and it needs rod holders, boards, line counters and a different rod. This is the casting kit. Nobody does both well on the same trip.

No second rod. You want one, rigged with the other bait family, so a follow on rubber can be answered immediately with a bucktail. It is the first thing to add.

No sun protection, no gloves. Not because you should skip them, but because they are personal fit items.
