How many beaches are on Lake Ontario?

This directory lists 24 beaches on the U.S. shore of Lake Ontario in New York: every one the states file with EPA under the federal BEACH Act, which covers coastal and Great Lakes beaches open to the public. Together they add up to about 10 miles of listed shoreline. Canadian beaches are not included. Unlisted strips of public shore exist too; they are just not in the federal record.

Is it safe to swim in Lake Ontario?

Usually, with two checks. Water quality: 17 of these 24 beaches were sampled for bacteria in the 2025 season, and the states post an advisory or closure when a sample runs high, most often after heavy rain. Waves: rip and structural currents are the bigger killer on the Great Lakes, especially near piers. Check the National Weather Service beach forecast and obey the flags.

Where can I check Lake Ontario beach closures?

Each state runs its own beach status page: New York at parks.ny.gov. Every beach page here links to the right one.

What are the longest beaches on Lake Ontario?

By the lengths states report to EPA: Fair Haven Beach State Park - East (2.2 miles), Hamlin Beach State Park - H3a (1.8 miles), HAMLIN BEACH STATE PARk - H4 (1.4 miles). States measure a listed beach their own way, sometimes as one long stretch and sometimes as many short access points, so lengths compare best within a state.
