A floating, submersible six-watt handheld that reaches the Coast Guard when a cell phone has no bars, which offshore on Superior and Huron is most of the time.

What's good

  • Floats and strobes when dropped overboard, so a fumbled radio is recoverable
  • Six watts gets useful range to a shore station or a nearby boat, which is what matters in an emergency
  • Channel 16 monitoring means you hear the securite and distress traffic that a phone never carries

What isn't

  • Handheld range is line-of-sight and modest — roughly five to eight miles boat to boat, far less than a fixed-mount with a masthead antenna

We list the drawbacks because a recommendation with no downside is a sales pitch. If a cheaper item does the job on your water, the write-up says so.
