Classic Thermal Base Layer Set

4.6(2,800)4.6 out of 5 stars, 2,800 reviews, on Amazon at the time this was written

Merino wool top and bottom that insulate when damp and do not stink after three days, which is the entire argument against cheaper synthetic layers.

What's good

  • Merino retains most of its insulating value when damp with sweat, unlike cotton and better than most synthetics
  • Naturally odor-resistant, so a multi-day trip does not require packing three sets
  • Regulates well across a range — warm sitting still in a shanty, not stifling on the walk out

What isn't

  • Expensive per garment and less durable than synthetic — merino pills and eventually wears through at the elbows and seat

We list the drawbacks because a recommendation with no downside is a sales pitch. If a cheaper item does the job on your water, the write-up says so.
